While I don't personally know anyone who was affected by not learning how to read, I am deeply moved by the worldwide epidemic of illiteracy. I was completely shocked when I learned that 1 in 4 American children do not learn how to read. Reading has changed my life in such a profound way. It gives me the power to learn.
I value knowledge more than vacations, more than entertainment, more than lots of things. I have earned three separate degrees: Creative Writing in 1999, K-6 Teacher Licensure in 2007, and Website Developer in 2013. If I couldn't read, none of that would have been possible. I wouldn't know Jesus more deeply from the scriptures. I couldn't read birthday cards or love letters or instructions to put together toys. I couldn't read a recipe, or a menu, or directions on the highway.
Reading and writing are integral parts of my everyday life. My dream was always to become a writer. I am extremely blessed to be able to do what I love. When I think about people not being able to live their dreams, I get teary-eyed. If I had a million dollars, what would I do with it?
I could help people get jobs, help end homelessness, support animal rights, or any number of possible things! Since my passion is writing, it made sense to donate to existing literacy charities throughout the world. And that's why I created Read the Next Book. My goal is to eradicate worldwide illiteracy - one reader at a time. Together, we will change the world!
